UAW state house candidates pledge to fight for workers

This November General Motors’ workers in Spring Hill will recognize two names on the ballot for the Tennessee State House of Representatives.

Guy Z. Derryberry is running in the 64th District and John A. Murphy is a candidate in the 63rd District. Both retired from the Saturn plant this year. Both are Democrats. Both are committed to protecting workers’ rights in Tennessee.

Derryberry is no stranger to the political arena. Following eight years as chairman of Local 1853’s Community Action Program Council, he served on the executive board of the Tennessee State CAP Council, the past four years as chairman. He has been appointed by Gov. Phil Bredesen to serve on the Tennessee Council of Vocational Education and the State and Local Workforce Development Board.

Married for 33 years, Guy has four children and five grandchildren. He is a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and is a very active member of his community. He is a member of the Maury County Gun Club and Masonic Lodge Number 31, and a strong supporter of the Maury County March of Dimes, Hope House for battered women and Mount Pleasant Lions Club.
Murphy, a 30-year employee of General Motors, has held several elected and appointed positions with the UAW, including Local 1853’s CAP Council. Like Guy, John is deeply involved in his community and assisting his fellow citizens.

He is a member of the Elks Lodge and has organized more than 20 charity golf tournaments, benefiting various organizations such as Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Nashville Rescue Mission and juvenile diabetes. Murphy is married with three children.
Both gentlemen share more than a history of working for GM and a dedication to their community. They share a vision of a better Tennessee. They both support an increase in the minimum wage, equal pay provisions for women who perform equal work and other workers’ issues, such as health insurance and jobs.

Both Guy and John believe it is important to have a worker’s voice in government and to make sure state government listens to the people.

They pledge to take the concerns of working people to Capitol Hill.

Their experience as union members with families makes them valuable assets in their community.
They will be indispensable assets in the legislature, as well. Both candidates have Web sites to inform voters about their vision for a successful future for Tennessee. Go to www.guyzderryberry.com and www.johnamurphy2006.com for more information.
