Taking action to change society

Activism is at the heart of what organized labor is all about. Webster’s Dictionary describes activism as “action to bring about social or political change.”

The UAW strives to bring about social change, that is, changing the injustices in society for the betterment of all. Organized labor has often stood as the strongest voice for working-class people of all cultures, races, gender and nationalities.

To highlight activism as a part of unionism, Region 8 has introduced a new feature – the Activist Hall of Fame – on its Web site, www.uawregion8. net.

Unfortunately our history books do not always tell the stories of these men and women who took risks in the cause of social and economic justice for all.

We in labor should never forget the names and deeds of those great warriors who took on the fight for social change in this and other countries.

Their legacy inspires and motivates us as we continue to fight for the rights of workers in our own workplaces, communities and world.

By showing examples of ordinary people fighting to make a difference, we can show today’s generation that they, too, can make a difference. That is why UAW Region 8 dedicates this Activist Hall of Fame.

Horace Mann, considered by many to be the father of public education in this country, once said “Be ashamed to die until you have won one victory for humanity.”

The Region 8 Activist Hall of Fame isn’t just for honoring the big name activists who won big victories, such as Walter Reuther and Martin Luther King.

You can nominate local activists and small victories as well, by emailing us at .
