NC/SC Civil Rights Council Meeting

The NC/SC Civil Rights Council met on July 22, 2006 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Council had the task of nominating and electing new officers at this quarterly meeting. The new officers are President Ricky McDowell, Vice President Nona Byrd, Recording Secretary Gene Hollerman, and Financial Secretary Al Hill; these officers took their post immediately after winning by acclamation.

During the meeting, there were two highly motivated speakers, which kept the members full attention. The speakers were Nick Woods, a Smithfield Organizer, and Lonnie Randolph, Jr. SC State NAACP President. Nick Woods spoke on the current events of the Smithfield Meat Packing Plant attempts to finally get a chance to form their own Union. Nick showed a short film on the progress of the Smithfield organizing campaign. President Randolph gave updates on the Economic Boycotts that are in effect in SC and why the NAACP has taken their stance. He stated the Boycott is on Tourism sanctions not the everyday spending in SC. Randolph also announced, that the UAW will hold a press conference on 2 August 2006 and announce their support of the Economic Boycott.

Members of the Council applauded the UAW for joining other organizations in their stance on the Boycott.

President Ricky McDowell vowed to Lonnie Randolph and Nick Woods, “This Council will show continued support to both campaigns until we achieve VICTORY!”
