Operation Unlock Receives Generous Donation From UAW

August 11, 2006, Canton, Mississippi, Giving to improve the quality of life for children of the incarcerated is the motivating force behind the United Auto Workers contribution to the Operation Unlock program. A generous gift of $5700 has been donated to this groundbreaking program, founded by Mayor Fred Esco Jr.

Capturing the vision of this program, Regional Director Gary Casteel and International Representative Tom Savage wasted no time in deciding to assist this high-impact program. As with most non-profit organizations, the lifeline for Operation Unlock depends on volunteers and financial support, and the U.A.W. members is no exception giving generously to help make this program a success. “This funding makes it possible to reach more children by expanding to offer on-campus intervention services at Canton High School. The donation will be used to develop curriculum, programming, training modules and learning tools. We truly appreciate the generosity of the Region 8 U.A.W. Their kindness and compassion toward our children will long be remembered,” states Fredia Day, Executive Director of Operation Unlock.”

Operation Unlock is a non-traditional intervention model designed to address the emotional/social/cognitive needs of children ages 5-18 who have incarcerated parents. This emotionally healthy outlet provides nurture, motivation, mentoring and instruction to children who live with the reality and stigma of having a parent in prison.
