Everyone Has Civil/ Human Rights
Jeff Hicks\LUPA 3520

Locals 3520, 5286, and 5287 received intense and valuable training on Civil and Human Rights. Instructors Millie Smith and Joe Rypkowski were brought in by the International and the Region to break it down to the Locals. The Training included the District Reps and the Civil Rights Committees.

First things first, Civil/Human Rights were explained by the definition: Civil
Rights are protected by Title VII of the Civil Right Act of 1964 and Human Rights are given to you when you were born. The Civil Rights that are protected are age, sex, race, color and national origin. The age cutoff that is cover is 40years old. It was also stressed that the Discrimination Article in most contracts covers more categories.

The members were asked what they wanted to receive out of the days training. A list was compiled and the instructors made sure they covered the issues, with no shame in their game. The instructors taught the class with real life facts and situations.

Millie; with her backup Joe, taught the members what to look for in all forms of discrimination and sexual harassment. Millie also explained to all the Civil Rights Committees that their function in the Local “Is to eliminate discrimination in the workplace.” She also told them that the Committee is there to assist the District Reps and the Shop Chairs to seek out facts when requested. Millie also reminded the members; out of proper Protocol, do not take questions from the EEOC that is her Job. She stated just notify the EEOC that your International and your Region are taking charge of the case. The Local will be kept informed by the servicing rep.

The members were put into different scenarios and they had to answer if it was or was not any discrimination or harassment involved with the scenario.
They were also instructed; do not make something out of nothing.” Go back and get more facts before you render an honest decision.”

The day was summed up by the statement” Everyone has the Right to work in an environment that is free of any form of Intimidation, offensive and hostile behavior.” The first question; that should be asked, before moving on any action.

Why do you feel you have been discriminated against?
