       Bringing labor, community together
Florida local co-sponsors Festival for the People
      by Rita Erwin Local 1821
May 3-4 marks the third year that Local 1821
and Region 8 Community Action Program (CAP) will have jointly sponsored
the AAAFC's Cultural Arts Festival, a Festival For The People, held in
        Ocala, Fla.
The festival was started 14 years ago as a vehicle for all cultures to
come together and share their unique histories. An estimated 4,500 people
        attend the festival every year.

Sponsorship gives Local 1821, along with our retirees, an opportunity
to share some background history on the labor movement with our community.
We provide literature on the accomplishments of minorities in the labor
movement. Our local also sponsors a display, which our own Carol Westman
designed and built for use at other events throughout our community. This
year, Local 1821 will be raffling off two portable stereos to whoever
can answer correctly ten labor-related questions.

The Festival for the People presents a unique opportunity for the UAW
to impress on our community our dedication to diversity, community involvement
and family. Our goal is to educate our community on labor unions, combat
the negative stereotypes and to promote awareness of the positive impact
labor unions have on families and communities.

For more information on this year's festival, visit the Region 8 website
