Region 8 Grievance Training At Local 738
Under the direction of UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith, UAW Region 8 Education Representative David “Shaggy” Firkins conducted a comprehensive steward training at UAW Local 738 in Baltimore, Maryland. Local 738 President Gary Virtz was in attendance and played an integral role in supporting the grievance handling portion of the training.
The session brought together both newly appointed and experienced stewards, creating a collaborative learning environment focused on strengthening representation and leadership skills. Brother Firkins facilitated three core courses: Understanding Grievances, Grievance Handling, and UAW 101.
Through this training, stewards gained practical knowledge and essential tools to effectively represent their members in matters involving contract violations, workplace policies, and labor laws. The program emphasized preparation, consistency, and confidence in advocating for the membership.
President Gary Virtz expressed strong confidence in the group, noting the growth he witnessed throughout the training. He highlighted the stewards’ potential and passion, adding that the Region 8 training helped elevate their confidence and readiness to serve their fellow members.
Director Tim Smith also joined the session via phone, offering words of encouragement, sharing valuable insight, and taking time to address questions from the stewards.
This training reflects UAW Region 8’s continued commitment to developing strong, knowledgeable leadership at the local level and ensuring that every member is represented with professionalism, strength, and solidarity. |
