Spring Cleaning For The Walter Reuther Memorial On Wheeling’s River Walk
In 2006, UAW Region 8 spearheaded an effort to include a display on Wheeling, West Virginia’s River Walk. The memorial features a bronze statue of UAW President Walter Reuther with placards that telling about his life both in and out of Wheeling. Reuther was born and raised in Wheeling, before making his way to Detroit to find work in the automotive industry.
With the memorial being outside, it requires periodical maintenance to keep it looking new. Every spring a group of CAP members gathers to clean and scrub.
The Wheeling Heritage Foundation commented on the efforts “A big thank you to UAW Region 8 for their tradition of caring for this special space. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to refresh the site with new mulch, flowers, and a seasonal trim to help keep the memorial looking its best.
Walter Reuther once said, "There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow man. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well. "
We're grateful to the UAW Region 8 for carrying that spirit forward here in Wheeling, year after year.
