A Historic Win for Workers Across the South
By Tim Smith, UAW Region 8 Director  |  Chattanooga, Tennessee

What workers achieved at Volkswagen Chattanooga is nothing short of historic—not only for one plant, but for working people across the entire South.

In a decisive and courageous vote, workers chose to join the UAW, proving once again that when workers unite, we can win anywhere. Against intense pressure, these workers stood together and made history.

That unity is already producing real results.

UAW Local 42 has reached a Tentative Agreement on a first contract—turning that historic vote into higher standards, stronger protections, and a real voice on the job.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT
  • Wage increases and bonuses that recognize workers’ value
  • Improved healthcare protections for working families
  • Job security language to guard against outsourcing and instability
  • Enforceable health and safety standards
  • Fair scheduling, overtime protections, and paid time off
  • A strong grievance process that guarantees dignity and due process
  • A real, enforceable voice on the shop floor
Southern workers are rising—together.
These gains were not given—they were organized, demanded, and won through unity.

This victory belongs to Local 42, but its impact reaches across the South. From auto plants to battery facilities, workers are watching—and learning what unity can achieve.

Region 8 stands proudly with the members of UAW Local 42 as they move forward together—raising standards and building power across the South.

In unity and solidarity,
Tim Smith
UAW Region 8 Director
